On Friday, May 29th, Sequoia Deaf School and Sequoia Secondary School had the tremendous honor of hosting Mr. Troy Kotsur as the Class of 2016's Commencement Speaker. Mr. Kotsur is a well known actor and director within the Deaf Community. He was born Deaf and is a native of city of Mesa, Arizona. After high school, Mr. Kotsur attended Gallaudet University majoring in Theater as well as studying acting at several colleges. In addition, Mr. Kotsur interned at KTSP-TV in Phoenix, Arizona where he work as an editor, researcher, and interviewer.
Mr. Kotsur has been involved with a variety of acting opportunities with Deaf West Theatre in Hollywood. As a member of the Deaf West Theatre, he traveled the country performing. He also was a guest actor in several television shows: Strong Medicine, Sue Thomas: F.B. Eye, CSI: New York, Doc, Scrubs, and Criminal Minds. He has directed more than 10 theatrical productions, including L.A. Times' Best Bet Weekend Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp at Deaf West Theatre. He was the director for a film called No Ordinary Hero: The SuperDeafy Movie (2013).
Mr. Kotsur's commencement speech for Class of 2016 was an inspiring, especially for the eight graduates of Sequoia Deaf School. We hope that our seniors will take Mr. Kotsur's words and pursue their dreams. Congratulations, Graduates of the Class of 2016!
