$2,000 will provide funding for the Horne Campus Garden

Mesa, AZ — The Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation has awarded a $2,000 Lowe's Toolbox for Education® grant to Sequoia Charter School in Mesa for: Revitalization of the current school garden by providing supplies for the improvement of overall planting conditions.

Sequoia Charter School is one of 593 schools across the United States to be awarded a Lowe's Toolbox for Education grant during its fall 2016 grants cycle for improvement projects.

The garden area, which measures approximately 20' X 45', was originally funded by a community educational grant. The fence surrounding the area was a former student's Eagle Scout Project. In past years the area has fallen into disrepair. Students, teachers, and parents have all shown an interest in bringing this lovely little garden, located in the middle of our campus, back to life. The Lowe's Toolbox for Education Grant will help by providing square foot gardening box soil, seeds and plants as well as watering system materials and supplies to repair the existing 4'chain link fence. The project is scheduled to be completed before November 2017.

Gardening is a great way to learn to manage troubling and difficult times through the solitude of the quietness of gardening. With young people, gardening can mold and enhance the qualities of creativity, curiosity, perseverance and passion for seeing an idea or a dream come to "fruition". In addition, It is a wonderful opportunity to teach our students to appreciate the work, patience and rewards of growing their own food.

Since its inception in 2005, Lowe's Toolbox for Education has provided more than $45 million in grants to more than 10,000 schools, benefiting more than 6 million schoolchildren. Grants are available to K-12 public schools in the United States for a wide range of improvement projects. Schools may be eligible to receive Toolbox grants up to $100,000.
